Places to visit

Idyllic places to visit around the Rhine and Lake Constance

Stein am Rhein – living history beside the Rhine

This mediaeval town is one of the most popular tourist attractions on the Upper Rhine, with its many decorated houses and pretty location, surrounded by vineyards and guarded by the 12th century Hohenklingen Castle. Especially worth a visit are the Town Hall, St. George's Abbey, the Lindwurm Museum and, of course, the beautiful frescoes on the facades of the houses on the main square.

Wagenhausen Provost's Church – the most beautiful church in Thurgau

Until the Reformation, a community of Benedictine monks lived in the Provost's Church, which was built in 1087 and is the most famous landmark in Wagenhausen. Today it serves as the church for the local population and is a popular venue for weddings. A famous feature is St Mary's bell which dates from 1291, the year in which the Swiss Federation was founded.

Mainau Island – where Lake Constance blooms

You will find a wonderful display of flowers all year round on the famous Island of Flowers in Lake Constance. The butterfly house, children's playground and petting zoo are all worth a visit – as is, of course, the baroque castle which hosts new exhibitions every year. Mainau Island can be reached by train, bus or boat.

Rhine Falls – a unique natural spectacle

The Rhine Falls are probably the most famous tourist attraction in northern Switzerland – and a magnificent wonder of Nature! Europe's biggest waterfall is 150 metres wide and 23 metres high. You can go on a boat ride to the huge rock in the middle, surrounded by the raging water. From Laufen Castle, a footpath leads down through the spray to the "Känzeli" platform overlooking the falls.

Schaffhausen – cultural heritage beside the Rhine

This carefully preserved mediaeval town is dominated by the over 400-year-old Munot fortress, the town's symbol. You can go on an interesting tour which includes the decorated Haus zum Ritter, the cloisters in the former All Saints Abbey and the Romanesque cathedral.

Boat trip – discover the Rhine from the water

One of the highlights of the Thurgau region is a boat ride on one of the most beautiful sections of the Rhine. You can enjoy not only the views of the scenery and historic and cultural towns and buildings passing by, but also some excellent culinary treats. Boat trips from Schaffhausen to Kreuzlingen or Konstanz on Lake Constance can easily be combined with a train trip or a bike ride.

The best way to plan your outing is to use the Thurgau Tourism Experience finderwebsite.
